Of Mice and Men- Plot (Draft 1)

Plot
The story starts with a short description of Lennie and George. They are walking down a path through the woods, heading towards a job at the ranch. Lennie sees a pond, and stops for a drink. George takes a few sips, saying that they are close enough, and sets up a camp for the night near some bushes and the pond. He sends Lennie off to get some wood for a fire, meanwhile grumbling to himself about some farmer that gave them a horrible estimate on how far away the ranch was. When Lennie comes back, he is holding a few pieces of wood and has something in his hand. George tells Lennie to give it over, but Lennie refuses. After 5 minutes of arguing back and forth, George finally gets the object from Lennie and discovers it is a small, dead mouse.
Lennie tells him that he likes fluffy things because he likes to touch them. George tells him that when they go for their job interview that he needs to keep quiet and not move, just let him do the talking. He also tells him not to get into any trouble, or else he can’t tend the rabbits on their future farm. The reason for this is that Lennie got them fired from their old job because he wanted to touch a girl’s dress just to feel it, but when she started yelling he got scared and wouldn’t let go. This got them fired. George also tells Lennie that if he DOES ever get into trouble to come wait in the bushes by this pond.
Lennie and George fall asleep, with Lennie repeating all that George has told him. In the morning, they pack up their tents and things and head to the ranch. Along the way, George quizzes Lennie on what he told him the night before. They get to the ranch and are shown their beds by a one-handed old swamper named Candy. Then, they meet the boss. The boss is very annoyed with them, because they were supposed to get to the ranch yesterday and go out early this morning working.
He questions George and Lennie, and George does all the talking. However, the boss gets very suspicious and says that they can’t put one over him, and that he has seen these type of acts before. However, after a demonstration of Lennie’s strength, they are hired immediately and ordered to go find the head of their team, Slim, after dinner. They go out and work a bit, and then return to go to bed.
However, they first have an encounter with Curley –and his wife. Curley shows immediate hate for Lennie, who gets very confused. They are then told by Slim that Curley holds a grudge against almost anyone bigger than him just because he is little, and thinks he is more important than others because his father owns the ranch. Then, they meet Curley’s wife. Lennie is immediately attracted to her because she is so pretty, and wears bright colors. However, after George is told that she gets the other men in trouble with Curley, he immediately tells Lennie to stay away from her, as well as Curley, because he doesn’t want any accidents.
The boys go to bed, and wake up early in the morning to start work. After work, they hear that one of the men’s dogs has had puppies, and that he is giving them away. Upon hearing this, Lennie wants one, and George agrees, as dogs are big and can’t be killed easy. Lennie goes to ask for one and gets the one he likes, a “brown n ‘white spotted one”. He wants to take it with him, but is told not to, as the pup needs it’s mom for at least 2 more weeks.
When Lennie gets back, the men are playing cards and talking about Candy’s dog. They keep telling him that the dog is ancient, and smelly, and needs to be killed because he is just in too much pain alive. Then, they tell him that they’ll kill him painlessly with a shotgun right then. Candy puts up a fight, saying that he has had the dog since a pup, and that he grew up with the dog etc., but in the end, a man named Carlson convinces him that the dog should die and takes him away and mercilessly shoots him.
After that, Candy lays quiet on his bed, not playing cards or talking or anything. The other men go out to town, and George and Lennie stay behind with Candy. Candy asks them why they even came to the ranch in the first place if they don’t like it, and George explains that they are saving up money to buy a farm of their own and then shipping out. George says that they are going to have a room of their own, with a little stove and a field of alfalfa, and a chicken coop, and a rabbit hutch, and their own crops and everything, and they’ll have their own workers and if they don’t like one of them, they’ll tell THEM to get out.
Candy smiles and tells them that he knows he is getting old, and soon, the ranch boss is going to fire him. He says that once he is fired, he is going to want to kill himself, because the ranch is where he has found refuge. He offers them $300 in funds towards their farm if he could come and live there with them. They agree, and say they won’t tell anyone else and go on doing their jobs, and then collect their money and go. George writes a letter to the owner of the farm and tells her that they’ll take the farm.
That night, Curley and Lennie get into a scuffle. Curley starts picking on Lennie, and tries to fight around with him. Lennie, scared and not sure of what he’s done to get this kind of treatment, is ordered by George to fight him. Lennie grabs Curley’s hand, and refusing to let go, crushes it. George runs over and tells him to let go of Curley’s hand, and threatens to blackmail Curley if he does anything to get Lennie and him fired.
Lennie ends up staying home while the men go out to town again for the night. He wanders around, looking for his puppy, and accidentally finds Crooks, the black slave. He talks with him for awhile, and Crooks scares him by telling him George might not come home. After seeing that Lennie would get mad and kill him though, he apologizes, telling him he is just kidding, and that of course George will come home.
While waiting for George, Lennie babbles on to Crooks about how he “ain’t s’posed t’ get in no trouble, else he won’t be able to tend to the rabbits”. He also tells Crooks about him, George, and Candy setting up a farm, and that HE is going to be in charge of the rabbits. At first, Crooks thinks he is crazy, but as he tells him more and more, the more real it becomes to Crooks- so real, in fact, that he offers to chip in a fair amount of money if he can live with them.
The men go to bed, waking up in the morning and working more. Lennie, after work, plays with his puppy in the barn, and accidently kills it. He sits there talking to himself, scolding himself for not listening and wondering if this is considered bad enough behavior so he can’t tend the rabbits. Curley’s wife comes in and sees him, so he quickly hides the puppy under the hay. She starts to talk to him, but he moves away, telling her he is not supposed to talk to her.

She grumbles, saying: “What is it, I’m not allowed to talk to anyone?” Lennie softly explains that he is not allowed to talk to her, or else he won’t get to tend to the rabbits. They start talking anyway, and she allows him to touch her hair, since he likes touching soft things. However, her vain spirit lead to her demise, because Lennie didn’t let go, and she started screaming. Lennie didn’t want to get in trouble, and didn’t understand, so he kept shaking her, and finally, broke her neck.
Lennie couldn’t understand what he had done. He was amazed at his power. He KNEW that this was something bad, so he covered her partway with hay and ran for the bushes, like George had told him. Presently, Slim came in the barn looking for Lennie. Instead, he found Curley’s wife, dead. He knew that Curley would go after Lennie immediately, and he couldn’t blame him. He told George, and George knew exactly where Lennie had gone.
George took his gun with him, and went after Lennie. Meanwhile, Lennie was at the pond. People were talking to him in his head- first it was his Aunt Clara, telling him how awful he was, and how he never ever listened, and that he should be more grateful of George. She reminded him that when he was scared, George was there, when he was hungry, George found him the best food. Then there came a big rabbit, and it told him what a wonderful life George could have had without Lennie. He reminds him that George could have had a family, his little farm, a better life in general without Lennie.
This terrified Lennie. He yelled at the rabbit, telling it that George would NEVER say anything like that or do anything like that. Just then, George came. He saw Lennie yelling and asked what about. Lennie told him, and George nodded. He could hear Curley and the ranch men coming in the distance, and he knew they would shoot Lennie down.

Lennie told George that he wanted to go to their little farmhouse right away. George nodded and agreed. “Its right over that hill right there,” he told Lennie, pointing. Lennie nodded and said, “Let’s go now.” He started walking, and as he did, George raised his gun, laid it against the back of Lennie’s head, and killed him painlessly in one clean shot.

While many might see George killing Lennie as cruel, I and my dad looked upon it as an act of kindness and mercy. George knew that Curley would have killed him anyway, and he wanted his friend to die peacefully, not scared and in pain. In a sense, he didn’t even lie to his friend- Lennie did get to go to his “farmhouse” and tend to the rabbits, in the end.

Of Mice and Men- Part 1

Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck
Book Report by Madison Nef

Characters

George
George is a small, runty man. He comes off as a tough, quick-minded, sharp-tongued person, but inside is actually very soft and caring. In times of need he is shown to be a very loyal and supportive friend. George is very opinionated about people, and holds a grudge with anyone who doesn’t like his best friend Lennie. He is a big dreamer, with hopes of someday owning his own farm.
Lennie
Lennie is described as a big, strong, lumbering person. He is unaware of his strength due to the fact that he is retarded, thereby killing almost anything he touches and won’t let go of. He has a strange fascination throughout the whole book with soft, fluffy things, particularly rabbits. He often carries about dead mice and things so that he can pet them for comfort. Lennie has a very short memory and attention span, and is often told what to do by George, one of the few people he respects and trusts. He has one dream, and that is to live on George’s farm and “tend to the rabbits”.
Old Man Candy
Candy is described as a kindly old man. He is rather small and is missing one hand due to an accident. He is a swamper on the ranch where George and Lennie find work, and is a good friend of theirs. He has a sheepdog that he has raised since a pup, and shows great sadness (as anyone would) when the ranch men take it away and shoot it. He knows he is getting old, and wants to leave the ranch independently without being fired. He has a bit of money and offers to live on the farm with Lennie and George, should they get it.

Curley
Curley is the main antagonist in the book. He is a small, rough little bully of a man who holds a grudge against any man who is larger than him. He is a big-headed fellow as his father is the owner of the ranch, so he can do almost anything he wants without getting fired. He holds a very big grudge against Lennie right from the start because of his size. Curley is described as getting jealous very easy as his wife toys with his emotions by visiting the other men on the ranch.
Curley’s Wife
Curley’s wife is an arrogant woman, who wanders about the ranch continuously looking for Curley, and he always looking for her. While she is not the main antagonist, she is a bad character for the fact that she plays around with the emotions and minds of the men on the ranch, specifically Lennie. She is described to be tall and very beautiful, always done up nice in makeup, a fancy dress, and a fancy curly hairstyle with ostrich feathers.
Crooks
Crooks is the slave at the ranch. He is old and disabled due to a horse kicking him in the back, but is still kept as a slave to tend the horses. He lives and has his own room above the barn, which is the envy of many ranchers, since they have to share a room. Crooks has a known love of reading, owning a dictionary and a few old war books. He is a very proud man that likes to keep to himself and even takes pride in caring for the horses. He offers to help Lennie and George out, should they buy their farm.
Setting
The story takes place during the Great Depression in California. The areas described in the book make it sound very country-like, where you had to rough it. There are many fields and lakes around, and the only way to travel is dirt roads and thin trails through the woods. The main town in the book is Soledad, which is a few miles away from the ranch that the characters find jobs at.
The story really takes place in California, but the author really leaves the state up to the reader, as he never specifies “California” in the book. The indoor area of the book, mainly the ranch bedroom, is the only other area described. The ranch room is described as a musty old room with 12 beds in it, 3 empty. There are small wooden shelves above each bed for each man to keep his personal belongings, and that is it.

Where to Find Worms

Where to Find Worms
One day I caught a toad,
A nice one was he,
So I put him in a tank,
I didn't think it was mean,
I gave him some leaves,
and a small little pool,
my sister and I,
thought the toad was real cool,
but then came the grown-ups,
they spoiled all the fun,
they said: "catch him some worms, or he'll die and be done!"
well, I looked and I looked,
I tried and I tried,
to find him some worms,
but I couldn't so he'll die,
but that I don't want,
so I'll let him go free,
If I can't buy him bugs,
I'll let him go by the trees.

This poem is a memorial to Stripes, a toad I caught yesterday. I gave him a few bugs and he ate them, but he doesn't eat them fast. I REALLY don't want to let him go, so hopefully I can find him some more food. The pictures above and to the side are of him. Isn't he cute? He is very small, so he doesn't need MUCH to eat. Right now he has 2 bugs in his tank, so he should be good to go.

Vegetable Soup Recipe- VERY YUMMY!

I was looking online for healthy soup recipes the other day, and I found this really good looking soup recipe that wasn't expensive either. I made it today, and it turned out very good- the whole family enjoyed it, except for my sister, who was too CHICKEN to try it. I am going to share this awesome recipe on my blog in hopes that everyone who reads will enjoy it too.

You Will Need:
2 bags of mixed frozen vegetables
2 cans of Italian Diced tomatoes
2 quarts of water
2 bouillon cubes (any flavor)

Prep: Mix together ingredients in a large cooking pot, wait until it boils, then cover and let simmer for 30 minutes. Then serve and eat plain or with a hint of ground pepper (I personally think it is better plain.)

And that's it! Its cheap, its tasty, and its big. My family each had a bowlful and there is still more than half a pot left (and I used a 2 gallon pot). Also- my Aunt Della arrived last night! I met her for the first (really second, but first for me) time in my life. She is really nice and has a good sense of humor, and I look forward to spending the next couple weeks hanging out with her.

New Course in 2 Months

I am excited, because in a few months, a new course is starting for me on coursera! Dad picked it out for me a few days ago, and it looks really good. It is called: Think Again: How to Reason and Argue. I consider myself pretty logical and definitely a good arguer already, so I am interested as to what this course can teach me.

I am not quite sure what to expect- After all, it IS a college course- but it just seems more like fun to me. What could the projects POSSIBLY be? Writing out a logical argument? And as for the reasoning- I don't even know.

However, I think it will be a fun and most certainly entertaining course. I cannot wait for it to start. In the meantime, the summer is ahead and I plan on swimming, biking, hiking, picnicking, canoeing and climbing the mountain with Dad. Also I have schoolwork..... :[

As for the recipe I keep saying I will put up.... don't expect it. Whenever I actually remember to ask Grandma before she goes up. I promise you though, it will be worth the wait. The pie is soooooooo good.... but anyways. It is nearly midnight, and I am VERY tired.

Good night readers,
Maddie

House Showing!

I know that yesterday I promised everyone a pie recipe, but I just COULDN'T blog about pie when our house was getting shown! We found out late last night that our house was going to get shown, so today we had to rush around like crazy cleaning up our home for the showing. I did my room REALLY good (I even got a compliment from the relator ) and then helped Grandma with the rest of the house. By the time we were finished, the house was spic and span.

Then, I had to leave for karate. The showing would be done while I was still at karate, but Grandma and Ashleigh would be home for the viewing. Gail, our real estate agent, came an hour early for cleaning- but it was already done. Then, it was just waiting for the woman to come at 6. I didn't get to meet the lady, and all I know is that she is from Maryland. All I can say to that is- WOW what a move.

Other than that, today has been pretty normal- hanging with my sis, doing schoolwork, going to karate, etc.... and even now I have some schoolwork left to finish. I have recently fallen behind on my minerals, so I need to pick up the pace and get them done now.

TOMORROW I should be able to put out the recipe for the chicken pot pie.... and I cannot wait to share it with my readers, because it is very good and filling.... my mouth is watering just thinking about it....

Well, I'd like to finish the rest of my work now, so I am going to end this post here.

News

A few weeks ago, my mom gave me some very exciting news- my aunt Della from England is coming over! I am very excited to meet her, because the last time I saw her I was about 1 month old.... so I remember literally NOTHING. I am always happy to meet new members of my family though.

My aunt Della is actually coming THIS Sunday! She will be staying with my mom in Jaffrey for about 2 1/2 weeks. On Sunday night, (as long as she is not too tired), Grandma, Ash, Dad and I were going to stop over to say hi. I'm even baking a batch of brownies for them!

Speaking of baking, I wanted to put up my Grandma's Chicken Pot Pie recipe.... unfortunately, she is already in bed, and therefore I will have to put it up in tomorrow's post. But until then, here is a great recipe for meringues.

You Will Need:
3 egg whites
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp vanilla or almond extract
2 to 3 drops assorted gel food coloring

Prep:
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Line two cookie sheets with foil.
In a large bowl, whip egg whites with electric mixer until soft peaks form. With mixer on, slowly add sugar, a tablespoon at a time. Add cream of tartar, vanilla or almond extract, and the gel food coloring. Continue beating until stiff peaks form.
Spoon mounds (about 2 tbsp each) onto foil-lined cookie sheets; space them about 1/2 inch apart.
Place both cookie sheets on the middle rack of the preheated oven and bake for 1 hour. Then, turn off oven and leave oven door closed for 10 minutes.
Remove meringues from baking sheets once cooled and store in an airtight container.

*WARNING: Anyone with allergies to egg should not eat meringues as they are mainly made from egg.

You know, the cookbook this recipe is in is the very first one I ever got- the one that inspired me to bake. I got it from my aunt Michelle a few years back, and since then it has been at my side giving me many delicious recipes. I am always going to keep this cookbook, regardless of how "girly-girly" it is. Thank you very much Aunt Michelle.

Sleepover with Ashleigh

Last night, I slept over with my sister. I have done this before with her, and sometimes she can get a bit annoying. She was in a bit of a mood when we went up, so I was a little worried about how she would behave, but she surprised me by falling asleep within 10 minutes. Being we went up at 9:30, I didn't fall asleep right away. However, I was a bit sleepy myself, and fell asleep about 45 minutes after my sister.

At a few points I woke up in the middle of the night. My sister frequently would squirm in her sleep, and since she was sleeping at the opposite side of the bed as me, I kept getting kicked. I also had to get up a few times because she rolled around a lot, and I didn't want her going off the edge of the bed.

I did manage to get a good night's sleep in though- until I was woken up by my sister at 8:30 in the morning. I was NOT  a happy camper. I even tried falling asleep again. But when my sister said she had to go "pee-pee", I knew I had to get up and help her. I wouldn't want her wetting the bed.... YUCK.

On a happier note, Dad is done with his programming class! Now he is just waiting for the results to prove that he passed. I have a lot of faith in him. He worked SO hard on the course, and it took up a lot of his time and made him unhappy, so he better have passed. The course looked very difficult- and I just learned that that was the BASIC course. Dad will be starting up the advanced one in September- yay.

Well, I have a LOT of work to get done today, so I will end this post here.
