Little Things

Sometimes all you need,
to brighten up your day,
is a simple smile or laugh,
sent from far away.
A rainbow forming from the clouds,
the stars that shine at night,
all the tiny things,
that make a day so bright,
a small yet perfect butterfly,
perched on a dainty flower,
jumping into puddles,
 from an afternoon shower,
All these little things,
they make our life so great,
yet are barely acknowledged,
until it is too late.
For little things create the big,
the "big" that we find great,
like going to a party,
or staying up real late.
but these things do not happen,
every single day,
and so we feel unlucky,
sad, and down in every way...
we feel rejected, and feel mad,
because our life's not "perfect",
but now, sit down, lie back,
reflect!
for it truly is the little things...
the little things that make life perfect.

Summer..?

I am pretty excited- summer is almost here! I think that a lot of kids my age look forward to summer too, but the main reason is not the same. I like summer because I get to go swimming, I can hang out with my friends during the week (so long as I get my work done) and my family does activities such as fishing, canoeing, and hiking. While I am sure that these are all things other kids think of and relate to summer, I would think that the main thing is getting a few months off from school.

Being homeschooled, I don't get the summer off- I work right through. I think that if I actually did get the summer off one time, I honestly wouldn't know what to do with myself! I'm so used to doing schoolwork that to have 2 months off would- well, bore me. While I may not LIKE some areas of my schooling, it does keep me occupied and somewhat interests me. Often, summer is normal days of work with swimming added in for me.

But for many other kids, summer is a time to hang with friends, swim, and go on fun family vacations. Whatever you are doing for summer, I hope you have fun! Leave me a comment telling me what you're doing! I plan on doing all of what I have mentioned above and climbing Mt. Monadnock with my Dad.

A shout out

This weekend, my dad hung out with me and my sister a lot. Usually he gets busy with work, but because of Memorial Day, he had free time. On Sunday and today he took us to the park, out for iced coffee, played xBox with me and my sister, and played with us. Despite me having to read Atlas Shrugged (a mediocre book by Ayn Rand), it was one of the most fun weekends I have had.

My sister and I have a surprise cooked up for my Dad and Grandma for all they do for us- but I'm not going to say what it is on here. Being it is late, I'm going to keep this post short: but before I go, I want to give a shout out to both my Dad and Grandma.

Dad: thanks for all the time you spend with me, for the late night gaming sessions, for the long, LONG talks at the park, for the hilarious snide comments, for all that you teach me and help me with, and for BEING AN AWESOME DAD.

Grandma: thanks for putting up with me when I am in bad moods and always forgiving me, for having long "girl" talks with me, for all that you've taught me about cooking, nursing and so much more and for all the help with Ashleigh.

I love the both of you sooooo much!!!!

Cat Simulator- Cool Game

After playing the game "The Very Organized Thief", I started looking for other first person 3D games. It wasn't long before I found one I liked: "Catlateral Damage". In a nutshell, you are a cat and your job is to knock everything off of everything- basically, be a cat. There are a few different modes- in one, you are given 2 minutes to knock 100+ items on the ground to win and in another you are given two minutes to knock multiple items down at once. Finally, there is "Litterbox" mode where you have free run of the house- wreaking havoc untimed.

You DO need to download Unity to play the game- but it is worth it. I also just found out that you need Unity to play the very organized thief as well, so it is well worth downloading. It is free, doesn't ask for ANY personal info and hasn't given me any issues in the month I have had it. You can check back to my older posts to find the link to "The Very Organized Thief" and you can check out "Catlateral Damage" here: http://www.catlateraldamage.com/play

If Unity is not installed on your computer already, the site will ask you to download it in order to play the game. While it may seem childish, it is a fun game so don't judge it by the name. Know any fun games? Leave me a comment and tell me below.

MAPS Testing Stress

This weekend I had my MAPS testing... I was SOOOO nervous! I always stress out about my testing in the week before, and then do good on my test. This year, I was above 9th grade level on both reading and math... and I'm only in 6th grade! However, I DO want to work on Latin root (hint to Dad) because I got a few of those and I had no idea what to do.

Other than that, not much has happened this week... except for an experiment with the bacon bowl. My aunt Michele sent my Dad a bacon bowl mold, and today me and my Grandma tried making them. The first thing that I want to say is... they are EXTREMELY greasy. Don't make them unless you are prepared to scrub the microwave to get spattering grease off of it.

In the end, the bowls came out fine... just a little smaller than anticipated. However, it was a fun experience and they were adorable- but I think they would be better at a party, not for a substantial meal. Thank you Aunt Michelle for sending them!

Have you had an experience with the Bacon Bowl? Leave it in the comments and tell me what YOU think of it!

Songs Tell You A Lot

Today I was talking to one of my friends about different songs when I realized- Songs can tell you a lot about a person! I figure that for someone to like a song, it has to have one of two things:

1) A good beat
2) Sentimental value or the song in some way relates to them.

Most often, the song has sentimental value and can tell you a lot about the person that listens to the song. While it may not completely define them, you can usually pick out a few things about them and their personality by listening to the song's lyrics. This trick is better to try on people you already know, because you will probably be able to pick out if they just like the beat or not.

Studies have shown that different types of music affect how the average person acts, especially classical- for many, classical music (slow classical music, that is) helps people to concentrate better when working. I personally prefer more upbeat songs as classical music puts me to sleep... but that's just me! Let me know in the comments what music YOU listen to while working!

The Sims 4

For those of you who don't know, I LOVE the Sims games- I play both 2 and 3. Now, Sims 4 is coming out in fall! I have seen some of the videos for create a sim, and it looks WAY more detailed. Instead of the usual sliders, you can now just drag and pull with your mouse to create your sims without going through TONS of menus like before. The only bad part about this game is that it is SUPER expensive right now- $50!!!
Other than that, I don't really have any exciting news- things are the same old same old. My sister is currently riding her tricycle around (over my feet) and singing songs from the movie Frozen. I have some math to finish and then I am done with schoolwork for the day- so I will end this post here.

Shakespeare Quote

Shakespeare – Madison Nef
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.
This was one of Shakespeare’s well known quotes. It is from his play “As You Like It” and begins a speech often referred to as “the seven ages of man”. But I am writing about neither the play nor the speech- I am writing about the meaning of the quote. I think that Shakespeare was trying to say that in life, you have many parts to play, many tasks to do- and to each person you play a different role.
For example- John might seem like a nice, obedient, good son to his parents, but at the same time when he is with his friends he is perceived as rebellious, funny and a daredevil. To his older sister, he might seem like a nuisance, a pest and adorable. It all depends on who you are with. When Shakespeare says that all men and women are players, and have their exits and entrances, he means that some people will only be in your life for a little while, before they are gone. It is the IMPACT that they have on your life that matters.
For instance, you can pass by someone on the street and say hello to them, and then you may never see them again… they left your life, and had almost no impact. On the other hand, you could pass someone on the street, say hi to them, and ask them out on a date… and they could become your boy/girl friend. No matter how long they stay, they will have impact on your life. The reference to the “seven ages” is simply the stages of life- infancy, childhood, teen years, adulthood, mid-adulthood, elder, and dependency.
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players.
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then, the whining school-boy with his satchel
and shining morning face, creeping like a snail
unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then, a soldier,
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honor, sudden, and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then, the justice,
In fair round belly, with a good capon lin'd,
With eyes severe, and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws, and modern instances,
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side,
His youthful hose, well sav'd, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.

My May Recommendations

I want to try a new type of blog- monthly recommendations! Basically, I am going to pick a song, a game, a recipe, and an app. I will try it for a few months and see how people like it- let me know in the comments and leave me YOUR recommendations!

Recommended Songs:

Tragedy - Celldweller I love the beat of this song! This was originally a Bee Gee's song, but after comparing versions, I prefer Celldweller's version.

Skyfall - Adele  I love the power that she puts into this song... it is a really good song. If you haven't heard it, you need to. It is the theme song to the 2012 James Bond movie of the same name.

My recommended game? Skyrim! I love this game, and so does my Dad- he is literally hooked on it! It is high quality gameplay- but it is also very expensive. But it is worth it! The detail in the game is amazing, and the interactions are great. From slaying dragons to picking flowers to even getting married, this game is sure to hypnotize you within minutes. But, since I know that everyone doesn't have $50 to throw away on a game- my recommended FREE game is The Very Organized Thief. It is a complicated search and find that is 3D- which is why I love it. The items are changed every game, as are codes so every game is unique. You can try it out for yourself here.

My recommended recipe has already been blogged about in my previous post- the wonderful stuffed baked potato! Just scroll down a few times to read it.

Finally, my recommended app is Video Star. It is a free app (the last I checked) and lets you create music videos from your playlist. It gives you the ability to edit the voices and beat of the song and supplies you with cool effects. You can snip and edit it- all in all it is a cool app.

Well, that's all for my recommendations. Let me know if I should do recommendations monthly or if you don't like this type of post.\

Stuffed Baked Potato Recipe

For lunch today, my family had chicken with a stuffed baked potato- and I wanted to share the potato recipe, mainly because I LOVED IT. It is really simple, and while it might not be the healthiest, it is VERY delicious.

You Will Need:
Idaho Potato, Medium Size
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp sour cream
1 tbsp mozzarella cheese (shredded)
1 tbsp cheddar cheese (shredded)

Prep:
Bake potato, and let rest for 5 minutes wrapped in a towel. Cut 1/3 of the top of the potato off. With a sharp knife, cube the potato inside the shell. Throw in your butter (chopped into small pieces) in immediately after cutting. Spread your sour cream over the top of the potato and sprinkle your cheese over the top. Finally, put your potato in the microwave for 10 seconds. Take out and enjoy! (At this point, you can add crumbled bacon bits if you want, but it depends on your preference).

I hope you enjoy this recipe! Remember to leave me recipes in the comments and I will give them a try....

Makeup with My Sister

Recently, I found out about the YouTuber Michelle Phan. For those of you who don't know who she is, she is an AWESOME beauty guru who is famous for her makeup tutorials. I was watching a few videos, and my sister came over to ask me something. An hour later, she and I were watching our 5th video. It turns out that she likes makeup too! At first, she didn't understand the tutorials and was upset that they were "getting their faces messy" but once I explained things to her, she enjoyed the videos more.

Below, I am including the links to the YouTube page and also the links to me and my sister's favorite tutorials.

Well, it turns out that me and Ashleigh had the same favorite video- her makeup tutorial inspired by Mexican Sugar Skulls. It is an awesome look for Halloween. Here is the link to that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HE2hq41B94

And here is the link to her YouTube page: https://www.youtube.com/user/MichellePhan

Go check it out, and leave me and Ashleigh a comment on what tutorial YOU liked best!

Check out my other Blog!

Last week, I did a LOT of work on one of my other blogs, The Book Stack. It is my literature site where I post all of my book reports and stories. Dad recently changed the rules on me and said that I can't post my reports on Think a Thought anymore, and that they have to go to JUST this blog. SO, if you want to read any more of my book reports or stories, please check out www.thebookstak.blogspot.com

The theme of last week (and probably this week too) was philosophy- so there are TWO reports on the site. One is about Rene Descartes, and the other is a 4-pager on Ayn Rand and HER theories. Ayn Rand especially is very interesting and you should go check it out (use the link above). I spent awhile doing it to, and Dad said I did alright.

So, here is what I want my readers to do: Go read my paper on Ayn Rand (you can check out the other one too if you want) and then come back to this post and leave me a comment on what you thought of my paper. Did I leave any important bits out? Did I overdo it? Let me know in the comments. Feel free to leave a comment on that blog too, but I don't check it as often so you may not get a fast reply.

Home Alone.... me and Ashleigh!

Today, my grandma had to go to a doctor's appointment, and Dad had to go with her, meaning me and Ashleigh were home alone for a bit. But no worries- me and Ashleigh actually get along really well on our own! We have fun getting our own breakfast, getting ready in the morning, and yes- as shocking as it may seem- doing our homework! My sister got MOST of her's done already, and is now cleaning her living room up.

I, however, take a LOOOONG time to do schoolwork... I still have my math, French and CodeAcademy to do. Oh well... I hope Dad understands, being I have to also entertain my sister. I just stopped writing for 5-6 minutes to sing Frozen songs with her... she actually knows most of the words, so we did a pretty good duet! I've been TRYING to teach her how to do a scale, so she sings a bit more on key, and she is doing pretty good. She'll be singing like a pro in no time!
