Preview of My Absolute Animal Blog

Koala Bear

Full grown Koala- AWWWW!
Please welcome our next foreign guest, coming from the world down under.... THE KOALA BEAR!  Koala bears are native to Australia, where they live a somewhat happy life stuffing down as many eucalyptus leaves as they can bare and lounging in eucalyptus trees. However, life is not all fun and games for this cheerful bear...

Many koala bears are getting killed and are becoming endangered due to trees getting chopped down for housing developments. With no trees, there is no place for the bears to sleep in and no leaves to eat. To add insult to injury, the bears that DO survive are attacked by the dogs that come with the people that move into the housing districts.

Koalas become fertile at 2-3 years old. A healthy female can produce about 1 young a year, for about 12 years. Twins are very rare. The first set of twin koalas were Euca and Lyptus, who were born at the University of Queensland in April of 1999. Mating season is from December to March, and gestation period is generally 35 days.
Baby Koala- EEEWWWW!

Baby koalas, or "joeys", are born bald, blind, and earless. They usually will stay in a small stomach pouch of it's mother's until it can survive a little on it's own. More developed koalas will catch rides on their mom's back.

Little Miss Muffet.... or Should I say Mom

OH MY GOD IT'S A BEETLE!!!!!!
See the shrieking cartoon woman above? Well, that was my mom today. I might as well tell the long and tedious beginning of the story.... You want to hear what happens NOW? FINE. Mom was in the laundry room folding some clothing and was just walking out to the hallway to pet Lucky when she screamed and came running into the office like a little girl. "WAYNE, WAYNE!" Mom screamed (Wayne is my Dad's name). I thought she had had a heart attack, she looked so scared.

But then, she said something about a beetle. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. A BEETLE CAUSED HER TO FLIP OUT AND COME RUNNING AND SCREAMING!? But she had to back up her story, so she said she thought it was an infestation and that two had dropped from the ceiling. (Which is probably true. My mom has a pretty crazy imagination.)

Well anyway, me and Dad walked to the laundry room, and there on the floor was a beetle barely worthy of it's title, it was so small. Dad picked it up in a napkin and promptly threw it in the trash. (See, the beetle wasn't even TOILET BOWL WORTHY. I have met ticks that have gotten formally flushed.)

Ah well, Moms will be Moms, and crying little babies will be crying little babies. And when they combine, they equal out into the worst nightmare possible... A CRYING MOM. Well anyway, that's about all the news I have for today.

More Poetry

BRAIN BLANK
Having a brain blank is never fun,
Because you can't think about anyone,
Or anything to be exact,
And you have to blog about the abstract,
But here are some ideas for you,
Read them all, and use them too!
You can blog about an artist,
A singer or an ant,
You can blog about a vegetable,
or a tree or plant,
You can blog about one of the seven wonders of the world,
And if you do your research, history will unfurl,
But alas, I still have a brain blank,
My brain is soggy and has sank,
Down to the bottom of the creative pit,
And it will stay there for a bit,
Until something creative comes along.

Christmas Poetry

The Grand Christmas Poem
The decorations go up a week after Thanksgiving,
Now's the time for merry living,
Gifts under the Christmas tree,
Carols sang in harmony,
Fruit cakes being thrown away,
Should guarantee a happy day,
The meal is in the oven now,
Mom says it's sure to bring a wow,
Now it's on the table ready to eat,
The meal has vegetables and meat,
CHICKEN POT PIE! A classic favorite,
Flaky crusts with meat that's savory,
Makes my mouth water at the smell,
It will taste good, I can tell.
After dinner we go to bed,
and leave safe wishes for Santa,
and when we wake in early morn,
only cookie crumbs adorn,
the plate that had been piled with treats,
and for the reindeer a bowl of beets,
I can't believe what I see,
underneath the Christmas tree,
PILES OF PRESENTS! ALL FOR ME!
And there's a stack for Ashleigh too,
So no one will be leaving blue.
I think we all can soundly say,
That Christmas is our favorite day.

Hurricane Sandy Leaves My Church Organ in Ruins.... PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Before I get into my normal blog, I just wanted to say sorry to all my readers that I have not blogged in a while. I was in NJ for Thanksgiving, and it's probably the only time I ever get a break from work. ( By the way, HAPPY LATE THANKSGIVING EVERYONE! )

Ok, what I am blogging about today is very serious. When Hurricane Sandy hit in NH, it ruined my church's organ! The organ was probably one of my favorite things about going to church. The organ's motor sucks in air from the outside, and when the hurricane hit, it sucked in too much water. The first week, the organ was fine, but the second week, it crashed and wouldn't play correctly.

The church found out that most of it's parts had rotted (as the organ has been around since the 1930's) and needed to be replaced. This includes all 600 pipes. The church has started a fund so that people can donate money for the organ, but even so, it is likely we won't have enough money for the repairs for at least another year.

If you would like to support my church and donate to save the organ, I would be very thankful and I am sure that the other people who go to my church would be too. If you donate, thank you very much in advance!

My Usual Schoolwork For The Day

Today, I wanted to put up my normal day of schoolwork and what it teaches me. Everyday, I have to do this:

  • 3 IXL partially done math problems
  • 1 college history course
  • My writing for Maddie's Think A Thought
  • My geography (Around the World in 80 Days)
  • Biology (Absolute Animal, OCCASIONALLY)
I might as well start off with math. Each day, I do a different topic in mathwork that will help me when I take the state test next year. I have been working on Fractions, Algebra, Percentages, and Decimals mostly this year. I am currently working in 6th Grade Math on IXL.com. Every year, I try to complete a grade level. Next year, I hope to start on 7th grade work. I have about 55% of the work from grade 6 done already, so I think I will start 7th next year.

Dad gets college lectures on tape from a company called The Great Courses. It teaches me mostly history. I have watched about 4 series of different history courses. I am currently working on Ancient and Medieval History. It is my favorite course out of all I have done. I like ANYTHING that talks about the Witch Trials. The witch trials are my favorite part of history because I like to hear what the supposed "witches" did.
For my writing lesson, I blog! So basically, what you are reading right now is my writing lesson. Blogging is my absolute, number one favorite thing to do. I love being able to write about almost anything! I only have to meet my minimum of 5 paragraphs of 5 sentences each.

I also do geography. I call my blog for geography Around the World in 80 Days. After reading the book of the same name, Dad gave me an 80-day assignment. Every day, I have to travel around 1000 miles to a new place, and then tell about what I do and give some facts about where I am at.

Finally, I do a blog for biology called Absolute Animals. I write 5 paragraphs containing important info about the animal, such as what it eats, mating season, it's habitat, etc. I am least fond of the animal blog. I have covered many animals, and it gets boring after awhile.

Christmas Is Closing In Fast

I can't believe that Christmas is ALMOST HERE! It is my favorite holiday, not just because you get gifts (though that IS part of it,) but because we are celebrating the birth of Jesus. That is the most important thing. Also Christmas is about giving, not getting. I am going to be cooking a delicious meal for my family this Christmas. Since there is a possibility of this being the last Christmas at the house I am currently in, I want to make it the best. I have already made my Holiday Perfection Checklist.

I am going to make a page on my blog with my checklist on it and as I get things done, I will cross them off. Also, just because I love to be festive, I am going to change my blog background to Christmas Theme early. I am also going to start doing some Christmas Poetry, and maybe put a holiday game on my blog if I can find one. I can't wait until December. Then, I can pull some Christmas decorations down from the attic and start decorating and baking.

Speaking of baking, I am going to make THE BEST meal for my family. On the menu is:

  • Split Pea Soup
  • Ham
  • French Bread (for soup
  • Roast Beef
  • Mashed Potatoes
    AND FOR DESSERT...
  • Blueberry Pie
  • Pear Cobbler
  • Gingerbread House
  • Vanilla Ice-cream
Next on my list is music. Here are some of my family's favorite Christmas tunes to listen to:
  • Dominic the Donkey
  • Jingle Bells
  • We Three Kings
  • So This Is Christmas
  • Do You Hear What I Hear
  • Rudolph The Red-nosed Reindeer
  • Here Comes Santa Claus
  • I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas
  • Little Drummer Boy

One more thing that my Dad insisted I attend to. If you are one of my friends and your phone number starts with 603-499, PLEASE STOP CALLING THE HOUSE EVERY NIGHT!!!! I DO NOT HAVE MY OWN PHONE, WHICH MEANS YOU ARE HOLDING UP DAD'S BUSINESS LINE WHICH I HONESTLY DO NOT APPRECIATE! PLEASE STOP!!!!

AZTECA IS RELEASED ON WIZARD101!

Today, Wizard101 is going to be offline to all player because they are bringing their latest world into the live game- AZTECA! Azteca is home of the Aztecasaurs (or dinosaurs, but that is what they call them in the game), and you, as a level 80 archmage wizard, have been sent to stop a giant meteor from hitting Azteca. (Kind of fits with this year being the year that the "world ends" huh?)

Now, on the right you see Morganthe, the evil sorceress and new threat to the spiral now that Malistaire is dead. OR IS HE!? We have heard news about an old character returning to help Morganthe and shocking all players. It has to be Malistaire. None of the other bosses I have ever fought have ever had any special meaning, and besides, look at the shape of the guy standing next to Morganthe. Definitely Malistaire.

Here is a photo that I snipped together of the two characters- the one that is Malistaire in the old quest line and the mysterious hooded figure.  Please tell me what you think in the comments below. Has Malistaire returned, or has someone totally unexpected come back to fight?

Well, that's about all I have for today. I know that there are new mounts, pets and game cards coming out that revolve around Azteca, but that's about it.

Bye,
Maddie

My Five Favorite Stores

Walmarts- I like Walmarts because it sells a little bit of everything. But the reason I like it most is probably because it usually has an ample selection of Monster High dolls. The workers at the one in my town are very friendly and always willing to help. (On the other hand, the bathrooms are very clean as well. That is ALWAYS  a plus for me. I hate sitting on a dirty seat or seeing a grimy floor.)

Dollar Tree- Another favorite of  mine, probably because it is within my price range. All of my Christmas shopping gets done at the Dollar Store. This year, I managed to spend $36 there on Christmas gifts. AND I'M NOT EVEN DONE YET!!!!! If you are family and are reading this, please excuse the dollar store gift. I don't have that much money. I try my hardest.

Justice- My absolute, number one favorite store in THE WORLD. It has my style of clothing, which is glittery and colorful. Also, Justice has tons of neat costume jewelry and accessories like scarves and ipod cases, and even little handbags. The only bad thing about Justice is that IT IS SO DARNED EXPENSIVE. Lucky for me, they are always having 40% off of 40% off sales, or else Dad would NEVER let me shop there.

Gamestop- I love gamestop mostly for the Wizard101 cards it sells. I don't think I have bought ANYTHING else there but wizard101 cards. Gamestop always has the latest game cards that come out, so they are my number one stop for cards. They don't have a very big computer game section, as they are more about wii and nintendo and stuff like that.

Petco- Only made the top 5 stores because it has needs for my dog. Also, they give away free stuff at their Halloween costume contests, even if you don't win. Plus, it cheers me up to go see different pets. They are just so cute! The one thing I DON'T like about petco is that it doesn't sell dogs. I would love to walk into petco and be able to look at dogs.

OVER 2000 PAGEVIEWS! OH MY GOSH!

Thanks to all of my readers! I am so happy! It made my day when I looked at my stats this morning for my blog and it said that I had 2096 page views for the whole time my blog has been open. I am so happy. Thanks again.

Anyway, I have more big news. Yesterday, I did the grand championship karate tournament. This tournament is the most important one, the one you work all year to get into.
Me and my friend had been doing synchronized all year in the tournament, and guess what? Not only were we invited, but we were the championship leaders for our division!

And it gets better still. Me and my friend, though we had barely practiced our form, went out and won 1st place! And this tournament, first place was a six foot trophy! I was so happy I almost cried. Here is a picture of trophy:

That is about it.

Daniel Boone

Daniel Boone Paper
By Madison Nef

Some people hate change. They are terrified of not fitting in because of doing something weird that THEY want to do. George Boone was not a person like this. Life was an open book to him. He and his wife and their nine children crossed the dangerous waters of the Atlantic to go to America. They were Quakers, and they had heard about free life in Pennsylvania. Quakers were frowned upon in England for their beliefs. Pennsylvania was their chance to live freely.
The Boone family settled down 50 miles from Pennsylvania and built a little cabin. George Boone was highly respected among the Quakers in the area, as were his children, particularly his middle son, Squire. Soon, Squire moved on to have his own children with his wife Sarah. His sixth child was Daniel Boone. Daniel was a wild-child. He could never stay in one place for longer than 5 minutes. He was walking, even running before he was even one year old.
Daniel being so free was not a problem at home, as there was plenty of roaming space in the cornfields and farm fields. The only time Young Daniel was trouble was when his family attended the meetings at the meetinghouse. The gatherings would go on for hours, and poor Daniel could not let go of his mother’s hand lest he wander away and not find his way back.
But direction was something that Daniel also had at a very young age. No matter if he went deep into the woods, he would always come out in time for dinner. He never once lost his way. He always had the gift of direction. Once, his older brother quoted “Daniel is like a wisp of chimney smoke on a windy day- even as you watch it, it disappears.”
As his father was a blacksmith, Daniel learned about metal at a young age. At 7 years old he was already making 50-60 nails a day alongside his father. Daniel never minded work that took him outside. The outdoors was his one and only school. But still, Daniel was a child. He enjoyed having fun with his friends too. They would go out in the woods together with their slingshots and bow and arrow, and have shooting contests in clearings.
Daniel was very strong. He learned a lot about pioneering that would guide him as he got older and went adventuring and hunting. He learned to plant and hunt, and he never disappointed his family in bringing back meat. He always managed to have enough for everyone to have their fill. He was known as one of the best hunters in his town, even at his young age.
One of Daniels secrets to success was he had made friends with the Indians when he was very young. They liked Daniel, because he treated them with respect as so many others did not. He frequently asked them questions, and they were happy to teach him how to stalk animals without being seen, heard, or smelled.  Daniel caught many animals just by using common sense and hanging around near water and salt.
When Daniel was 13, his family bought a plot of land 4 miles away for raising cows. The cows would stay there and grow fat, and give milk to make cheese and butter. The only problem was the 4 miles. How were the cows supposed to be fat if they had to walk 8 miles a day? The only choice was to send Daniel and his mother out in a small shack to live near the cows and make cheese and butter.
Every day, Daniel would bring the cows out to graze. He would then milk them and his mother would make cheese and butter. He would then take the goods to a cold natural spring and put them in it to keep cold. One day, Daniel brought back the cows but never returned himself. For 4 days he was missing.
Finally, his father found him out in the woods in a small bark shack like that of the Indians with a large bearskin. He explained that he was tracking a bear with his rifle and wanted to take him home for his family. The bear kept going, and he kept going too. The family had a pig out night on bear meat.
When Daniel was about 15, his family decided that it was time to move away from Pennsylvania. There were so many families crowding in, and it was starting to get unbearable. The family sold everything that wouldn’t fit in a wooden traveling wagon, and set off for Virginia. When the family reached Virginia, Daniel said his farewells and left to become a hunter and trapper.
Boone served the British in the French and Indian war. After sad defeat, he returned home. A few years later, he married Rebecca Bryan. Initially they lived in a cabin on his father’s farm land. They eventually had 10 children. Some Indians started getting out of hand, and Daniel soon left his wife and joined the militia again. His stealth helped him hunt in Cherokee land. The Cherokee Uprising kept him away from his home and the ones he loved for close to 2 years.
His chosen profession also kept him far from home. As a market hunter, he spent weeks, sometimes months at a time out in the wilderness hunting, with just a few men with him. Rebecca raised the children and took care of the farm almost all on her own. Frontiersmen often carved their initials on trees, and one of the most famous carvings’ of Boone’s was: “D. Boon Cilled a. Bar on this tree in year 1760.” A carving turned up later that was almost the same, and because Boone always spelled his name with an E, the carvings were thought to be fakes.
In 1776, Boone moved his family to Kentucky. They had a happy life there, until the American Revolutionary War brought violence to Kentucky. Boone went off to war again. His daughter and two other teenage girls were captured in July. Boone and a group of soldiers went after the Indians and attacked them as they stopped to eat. They rescued the girls and became local heroes, Boone already being well-known for his excellent hunting and pioneering.
After the Revolution was through, Boone settled back in Limestone, Kentucky, a successful Ohio River post at the time. He kept a little tavern and was a horse trader. He was elected to the Virginia state assembly not long after.
Soon, people in Limestone began booing at Boone for not being sophisticated. He soon lost his tavern and the small business he had. Sick of legal troubles, he moved to Missouri. He died at his house in Femme Osage Creek of natural causes just before his 86th birthday. His last words were short and simple: “I’m going now, my time has come.” He was buried next to his wife, who had died 7 years earlier. Boone may have seemed like your average pioneer, but he died a hero, both of war and of hunting.

Poor Ashleigh

Ashleigh is not feeling good today. She is acting very tired and has a low-grade fever. A few days ago, she threw up. It was not pretty. She has been coughing and sneezing for a long time now, so I decided that today I would give her special treatment. I let her play Wizard101 and helped her get some quests done, and I also made some juice for her.

Then, I helped her with coloring and learning her letters. She made a very pretty picture. Then, it was lunchtime. Ashleigh refused to eat. I finally said she could eat at her desk as long as she ate her food. She was more than happy to be a "big girl" like me. I had her sit right next to me. Mom lets us have cake after we finished our meals. (The cake was really good- EXTRA FROSTING!!!!)

Next, I put some music on youtube and me and Ashleigh had a dance-off. It was so cute to see her dance. I am pretty sure that we both looked pretty stupid dancing around though. Neither of us have had any dance lessons. We just improvise.

I love my sister, and I think the most important lesson I learned today was to always be nice to your family members and they will, in turn, be nice to you. But if you treat them like garbage, you can only expect the same back. Respect your family members ALWAYS.
